Abuelo Añejo 40°: Description and customer reviews

Part of the prestigious Abuelo line of Panamanian rums,Añejo is the result of a skilful blending by the Valera Hermanos distillery's cellar master, and three years' aging in small ex-bourbon oak casks. Thanks to Panama 's warm climate and perfect mastery of all the production stages, the rum acquires a rich aromatic palette, a fine balance and a suppleness much appreciated by connoisseurs.

Four international gold medals crown Abuelo Añejo, including two at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Nico's tasting notes

The initial aroma of this rum is pleasant, gently fruity and floral. The typical profile of Latin American rums (caramel, vanilla, tobacco…) is present in the background but not immediately obvious. Before that, there are some very ripe, crushed, and sweet red fruits, followed by other, more exotic ripe fruits that almost give the impression of a slightly heavy, or at least very aromatic, rum. The sweet and caramelized notes are pleasantly balanced.
The nose continues to surprise, this time with its freshness. The rum is both light and very aromatic, now with delicate spices and spring honey, acacia, or lavender. This "garrigue" character of lavender persists, along with a vegetal aspect reminiscent of rosemary. A slight industrial touch (motor oil) and smokiness (meat) complete this rather well-crafted nose.

The palate is very light and balanced. It's rather simple, a little sweet, with a familiar honey-tobacco-coffee triptych. It then unfolds on deeper, savory notes, more raisin-like and pastry-like.

On the finish, the rum fades from the palate, leaving behind fruity, tannic flavors of red plum.

"After a surprising and complex nose, this rum offers a very approachable palate with the well-known markers of Latin American rums..."
