Very old rum, Dos Maderas PX 5+5 (“two woods” in Spanish) is the product of triple aging.
This highly refined spirit is made from rum from Barbados and rum from Guyana. It is therefore a rum in the English tradition.
These rums age for five years in their countries of origin, under the tropical climate of the Caribbean, before being blended and undergoing further maturation in southern Spain, in Andalusia, at the home of the historic bottler Williams & Humbert. A second phase takes place over three years in Palo Cortado "Dos Cortados" casks, a rare variety of sherry. Finally, the last phase, concluding the ten-year aging process, takes place in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks.
The result is a syrupy rum, rich in its multiple terroirs.
Dos Maderas PX 5+5 is presented here in an attractive box containing 2 glasses.
Laurent's tasting notes
Its color is a deep copper with red highlights.
On the nose... quite a lot. There's fruit: fresh grapes, candied prunes and nuts, followed by almonds after a while. The barrel is there too, offering well-balanced oak and tobacco notes. Overall, it offers an interestingly dry, gourmand impression.
On the palate, we find tobacco and walnut, with candied fruit also present but a little in the background. The whole is soft, but well-balanced with alcohol.
The finish is long. The aromas of tobacco, walnuts, prunes and oak, which we enjoyed earlier, are again present.
"This is an interesting rum that can easily serve as a bridge between more classic, mild rums and more complex rums."
