The U.S. Virgin Islands are located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. This group of islands enjoys a warm, humid climate, perfect for growing sugar cane. What's more, the land is mainly volcanic in origin, making the soil fertile and ideal for growing sugar cane.

Today, the Virgin Islands are split in two: one part belongs to the United States, the other to Great Britain. Rums are produced in completely different styles within the archipelago.

At one of the most modern distilleries on the American side, Nelthtropp's in St. Croix, they produce light rums. Distillation takes place in a column still (five columns, to be precise). This production method yields refined rums. Meanwhile, on the British side, the rum is rhum agricole, produced more traditionally in an old pot still.

The main rums from the US Virgin Islands are Cruzan (produced since 1760), Sailor Jerry and Red Rum. There are also lesser-known rums, such as the A.H. Riise brand. Read less
