Captain Morgan Black Label is a blend of different molasses rums distilled in Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad in column and pot still, and aged for several years in oak barrels.
This is a simple, effective rum. You can drink it as a tasting rum, but it's more suited to cocktails. For example, you can add cola or ginger ale: 1 part rum to 3 parts cola or ginger ale, with a slice of lime and ice cubes... Cheers!
Nico's tasting notes
Summary: ripe fruit - leather - molasses - liquorice - full-bodied - roasted
The nose opens with the rather sweet and indulgent character of a Jamaican rum, reminiscent of banana and a touch of resin. Several distinct aroma families then emerge: pepper, coconut, and orange seem to lead us towards Barbados, while molasses and nuts suggest Guyana. Plum and tannins from other dark fruits add a bit of complexity, along with a slightly armored and metallic edge that follows. The profile is rich yet somewhat rugged, like a rum in the "Navy" style.
Aeration softens the edges, while caramel, molasses, and licorice round out the oak. A surprising touch of sugarcane juice or honey significantly enriches the nose. It continues to develop complexity with spices, vegetal notes, and nuts, giving it a slightly oxidized, aperitif-wine character. The rum becomes smoother, less harsh. The oak is more integrated, unfolding into nutty and cocoa notes.
The palate is soft on entry, revealing a sweet, juicy fruitiness that had been on the back burner until now. Molasses and wood then mingle in a smoother ambience, leading on to coffee and toasted nuts. All these notes remain light and well-balanced, until the toastiness takes over and swarms the taste buds.
On the finish, the same dark, roasted notes persist, with black coffee and roasted nuts.
"This is a true blend of Navy-style rums, a simple expression but nonetheless faithful to the style..."
